Vulture Removal from your Home or Neighborhood

The two species that most concern structures in the South Eastern United States are the American Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) and the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura). Vultures are a nuisance and can be hazardous to humans and their pets; they must be handled carefully and they can cause a big disturbance to daily life, but not because the ugly birds make noise or claw things. Since vultures eat rotting meat, they need very strong stomach acid to kill all that bacteria they ingest with their meal. The final digested product has to go somewhere, like your garden, car or house, where family pets or small children can get into it.  When large groups of vultures congregate near people’s homes, property damage can occur in the form of tearing of window caulking, roof shingles and vent seals.

A group of vultures has several names; cast, wake, committee, venue, vortex, kettle, or volt. The terms kettle and vortex refer to vultures in flight, while committee, volt, and venue refer to vultures resting in trees. Wake is reserved for a group of feeding vultures. Vultures are major consumers of carrion; they play a vital role in biodegradation, preventing the spread of life-threatening diseases such as rabies among animals and humans. The vulture’s digestive system contains acids that dissolve anthrax, botulism and cholera bacteria. Of course, this beneficial by-product can also damage your cars finish and is considered hazardous to handle, especially by children.

Bird Removal from Commercial Properties

Birds are commonly diagnosed as a result of customers physically seeing them, being distressed due to their droppings or hearing them chirping. Depending on the bird species, there are a variety of different control methods. Consult the office for more information particular to any given species.

Pigeons are a serious health hazard to humans. The droppings are a contamination hazard that carry bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Parasites that infest pigeons, such as fleas, mice, lice, and ticks, also bite humans. Pigeons are known to carry or transmit Newcastle disease, salmonella, cryplococcosis, and other diseases. Pigeon droppings will accelerate the deterioration of concrete, automobile paint, plaster, wood, and roofing.

Pigeons roost in storefront eaves, home attic rooftops, and air conditioning units, and once established will not leave unless removed. In enclosed areas such as home attics, droppings build up and odor occurs.

Bird Removal Services

ACM offers comprehensive services to remove nuisance birds from your business, commercial property and home. In addition, we offer humane trapping services for customers experiencing problems with wild animals on their property.

Bird Exclusion Services

Perhaps the most important service we provide is our ability to prevent birds from returning to your home or business. We accomplish this by making structural repairs or additions to remove the opportunity for animals to enter a building. In cases where animals have already taken up residence, our biological clean-up process will eliminate the scent markings animals use to communicate, thus removing any attraction for future animals to find ways to enter a contaminated space.

Animal Control Management will remove pigeons, biologically treat areas affected by urine and fecal matter, and repair entry points.

Possum Removal from Attic or Home

An Opossum (more commonly called Possum) is very similar to a raccoon. They leave damage to exterior entry points, and their droppings are of a similar size. Opossums can be a big problem around the house, especially for the family pets. Dog and cat food left outdoors can make for a battle zone between your pet and the opossum.

Central Florida opossums carry a variety of ectoparasites such as fleas, ticks, mites, and lice that may also bite humans. Fleas are very common on opossums. Flea eggs and larva are shed in areas frequented by opossums. Other diseases opossums may carry include tularemia, salmonella, toxoplasmosis, and coccidiosis. Infected animals may transmit Leptospirosis to humans and other animals through their urine and feces. Rabies is rare in opossums. Pets, horses, and other wildlife are also at risk for disease infection associated with opossums.

If you are experiencing problems with opossum infestation, we can help you. The staff of Animal Control Management will remove the opossum, biologically treat your attic for fecal and urine matter, and repair the entry points so that the problem will not reoccur.

Armadillo Removal from your Yard

Armadillos are characterized by the holes they leave around a customer’s yard. Large, “coffee can” sized holes, known as rooting, are generally used as a place of shelter, while smaller, golf-ball to tennis ball sized holes will be noticed around the area where the armadillos search for food. These smaller holes are typically in areas covered with mulch, or in dirt or sand.

Have you ever walked out your front door in the morning to retrieve the newspaper and seen a dozen holes in your yard? You most likely have an armadillo population. Armadillos use their sharp claws to dig for food and and shelter. Unfortunately, their shelter consists of those deep holes dug around and under your home and other areas on your land. Those holes are hazardous to the integrity of your property and can cause your structure to sink and crack.

Various diseases are associated with armadillos. The bacterium leprae can infect the animal, this is the bacteria which causes leprosy. Armadillos can carry rabies. But since rabies is contacted by humans through the bite of an animal, rabies is a low risk to humans because armadillos rarely bite.

If you are experiencing an armadillo infestation, you can count on us to resolve the problem for you. Animal Control Management will safely capture and remove an armadillo who has burrowed under the foundation of your home.

Snake Removal from your Yard or Home

Most people dread snakes – any sign of them can send people into a panic. The vast majority of snakes we deal with are non-venomous, however care must be taken during the occasional encounter with a venomous snake. The most common indicator that someone has a snake problem is after a visual encounter; however shed skin can also be an indicator. Certain species will often enter the attic or crawlspace of someone who is experiencing a rodent problem.

If you fall into the category, like most in Florida, of not knowing a venomous snake from a non-venomous snake, it’s best to call an expert to take care of the problem. All snakes in the Florida ecosystem have their place; however, that place may not be in your garage or in your home.

Recent news reports have educated people to the dangers of pet constrictors (Boa constrictors, Burmese pythons) escaping or being released into the wilds of Florida. Along with Central Florida’s venomous species, this should be a concern for the safety of your children and pets.

Coral Snakes are VENOMOUS and demand your respect. If you see a Coral Snake, (Red & Yellow) LEAVE IT ALONE! Make a note of its location and contact Animal Control Management immediately and we’ll come to you and humanely remove the snake from your house or place of business. Call our Emergency Animal Hotline at (386) 235-2175 and we’ll make a priority call to take care of your coral snake problem.

If you are experiencing problems with snakes around your home or business, we can help. Animal Control Management will safely remove any snake from your home and property.

Squirrel Removal from your Home, Attic or Roof

Squirrel Removal from your Attic or Home

Squirrel Removal - Squirrel nesting in attics can cause severe damage to insulation and wiring
Squirrel nesting in attics can cause severe damage to insulation and wiring

Squirrel removal is similar to Rats as far as symptoms go, but are primarily heard throughout the day, most commonly at sunrise, and sunset. They also leave small droppings, and leave trails and tunneling through insulation.

Squirrels are persistent and clever animals. They will empty your bird feeder in a short amount of time. They are notorious for digging in potted plants, flowerbeds and removing bulbs to chew on. They are constantly chewing because their teeth are constantly growing and the problems can start when squirrels make a home in your attic. Wood siding and electrical wiring are at risk of damage. Squirrels also carry fleas, and their feces and urine can cause an unpleasant odor in your home. Squirrels are rodents, and like rats, they will chew on wires and water lines. Remember, squirrel teeth continue to grow causing the animal to gnaw and chew to keep the teeth worn down.

Squirrels generally breed twice a year, once in the summer between May and June and again in the winter between December and February.  In Florida, due to mellow winters, the grey squirrels tend to extend the breeding season. The grey squirrel does not hibernate like some northern species of squirrel.  If you have squirrels in your attic, you will typically only have one family inside.  A dominant male and female will keep other squirrels away while they are nesting.  Trapping is one method of removal; another is the use of deterrents to persuade the animals to move out on their own.  If the squirrels leave they will take any offspring with them, grey squirrels are among the most devoted parents and will defend their babies to the death.  If we trap the adults, we will need to remove the babies by hand to either reunite the family or take the babies to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for care and eventual release.

The next step is repairing the entry point(s) after the animals are gone, and then eliminating odors and scent markings.  If we just seal an opening without treating the attractant scent markings, we are encouraging another squirrel family to damage the home to gain entry and take over the nesting area.

Animal Control Management will safely remove squirrels from your attic and biologically treat feces areas. Reconstruction of the entry points will be repaired to prevent a re-occurrence of the problem.

Squirrels are similar to rats with the damage they cause from chewing, feces and urine. Compare the symptoms to rats.

Raccoon Removal from your Attic or Roof

Raccoons are, in most cases, nocturnal. They leave large trails within the insulation, leave larger droppings, somewhat similar to a dog’s, and in most cases leave some form of damage to their entry point that can be easily viewed from the outside. They often have 3-5 babies in the attic area which need to be manually extracted and transported to a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator.

A major cause of home and attic damage, raccoons in Central Florida are always on the lookout for a great place to live and your attic is just right. Attics provide a dry, warm, safe shelter for raccoons to raise their young. Raccoons enter your home by prying open areas in soffits and vents and, once inside, the damage begins. Destruction of duct work, insulation, wiring, and wood often takes place, as well as damage to personal belongings stored in the attic. Your attic has also become an indoor toilet for your new tenants who leave behind urine and droppings. Parasites such as fleas can also be a problem long after the raccoon family has been removed.

Bat Removal and Control

Bat Removal from your Attic or Home

Animal Control Management uses extreme care in the bat removal and relocation of bats from your home and repairs the entry points to avoid future problems.

Bats are most notably characterized by the smell of their droppings (Guano). They fit in extremely tight spaces, and spend the day within this area. They leave the area soon after sunset to begin their nightly foraging. You will see Guano on the exterior of the building, usually at their entry point, be able to smell it from a distance, and in most cases the customer or a neighbor will have seen them exiting the building. They form large colonies when they take up residence.

Bats are associated with disease that affects people. Rabies is a dangerous and fatal disease if left untreated, but only a small percentage of bats tested in Central Florida have been infected with this virus. However, if you find a bat in your home and that bat has had the potential to come in contact with any pet or person in the home, the bat should be tested for rabies. If the bat is dead, it should be refrigerated (not frozen) and your local health department should be contacted. Histoplasmosis fungus is contained in the bat droppings. It can affect humans if inhaled in a confined area like an attic.

Bats are very beneficial to the ecosystem, eating thousands of insects per night. Learn more about our friends the bats at the Florida Bat Conservancy.

Rat Removal from Home Attic or Property

Eliminate disease with four feet and a tail!

Rats are typically indicated by noises being heard at night and scratching in the customer’s attic. They leave small droppings, and dig longer tunnels in insulation. We offer effective rat removal to eliminate your rat problem.

Rats can be a serious problem in Central Florida. Homes around marsh land and water tend to have the highest percentages of rat infestations. And in Central Florida, with its vast amount of creeks and ponds, most homes have some exposure to water. Rats can carry external parasites such as fleas, flies, maggots, ticks, and mites. Viruses, such as Hepatitis E, are not uncommon. While most homeowners will not come in contact with rats in their home, it’s for sure that the food stored in the family pantry will.

How do you know if you have rats in your house? Mostly, rats will be heard at night above the ceiling and sometimes in the walls. Rats will chew wires and water lines, risking fire and flood damage. They will eat and drink from pet bowls spreading diseases to the family pet. Rats will urinate and defecate on kitchen counters and food prep areas. An average litter is 6-12, gestation is 22-24 days and new rats reach reproductive maturity at about 3 months.

FACT: A healthy pair of rats can produce four generations and over 2000 descendants in a year.

A few notes about the use of poison: Poison, when effective, normally causes an already paranoid animal to become ill. Instead of leaving a home in search of water, the rat will usually burrow under insulation to protect itself from predators. That rat generally dies in the attic, under the insulation, creating an awful odor as it decomposes. Poison manufacturers claim the animal will leave to search for water. In reality, if there was not a water source in or near the home, the rat would not be living there. A rat can exist longer without water than a camel and they can obtain enough moisture from condensation on air conditioning lines to survive. Poisoned rats die inside homes, and someone will have to locate and remove the carcass. This still doesn’t solve the problem. Entry points and scent markings remain after the rat has been poisoned. The smell of the decaying rat will attract scavengers to the home as well. The home needs to be animal-proofed and treated to eliminate scent markings and odors.

Another reason we don’t use poison is called secondary poisoning. On occasion, a rat that has ingested poison will venture outdoors where predatory animals can easily catch and eat the toxic rat. An owl, hawk, snake, or even the family dog or cat can become ill or even die from eating a poisoned rat. And remember, this still does not solve the problem with animals getting into a home.
